Tools

Here are some of the tools I like to use.

Local Machine

My operating system of choice is Linux Mint. It’s easy to use, stable, and beautiful. Perfect for switching from Windows! If I ever needed something that runs the latest kernel or is more enterprise focused, I would probably try openSUSE Tumbleweed. My dream combo for work is R-Quarto-Shiny-Docker. R is powerful and has a great community. Adding Quarto on top as a publishing system, the Shiny framework for making apps, and Docker for reliable deployment - I rarely feel the need to use anything else.

In general, I prefer FLOSS and would like to see more usage, funding and collaboration in the public sector.

Server Stack

Here’s the software I run on my cloud server (a VPS). My VPS provider is Hetzner, a German company I can recommend — competitive prices, reliable, and easy to use. They have servers in Germany, Finland, Singapore, and the USA.

If you use this affiliate link, you’ll get €20 in credit to try out their cloud services — usually enough for 2–4 months on a small VPS like mine. If you stick around and spend your own money, I’ll receive €10 in credits.

Clicking on the links below will either lead you to a blog post where I walk you through setting this up or to the software’s homepage if I haven’t written a blog post yet.
